New Delhi [India], August 17 (ANI): Doctors of Lady Hardinge Medical College and members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) held a protest on Saturday against the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Speaking to ANI, Dr Prakash Lalchandani, state secretary of Indian Medical Association said that it was the duty of the doctors to hold a democratic protest for the justice the doctors deserved.
“The democratic protest that we are holding is our duty to ensure that the doctors of the country are served justice. No doctor wants to hold a protest. The government needs to take a step to meet our demands,” Lalchandani said.
Another protestor said that the doctors protesting for their safety at the workplace was a horrible situation in the country. He further added that if the demands of the doctors would not be met, they would have to take further action.
“It is a very horrible situation in the country today that the doctors have to step down for a protest to ensure their safety. We, doctors are still running our services and despite this, if our demands are not met, we will have to take further necessary steps. We are not demanding anything big, we are just demanding safety at our workplaces,” the protestor said.
Earlier today, as doctors continued their strike over the assault and rape of the doctor, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi registered more than 90 per cent reduction in admissions, OPDs and operation theatres.
According to an official status report signed by Dr Nirupam Madaan, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Delhi, the Emergency services and ICUs are functioning normally as of Saturday.
However, OPDs, admissions, operation theatres, Radiological investigations and Nuclear medicine have registered more than 90 per cent reduction while laboratory services have been affected by more than 80 per cent. (ANI)
