Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 11 (ANI): Two young siblings died after allegedly falling into a rainwater-filled pit at a cemetery in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, a police official said on Thursday.
The incident occurred in the Mohana locality in the district late Wednesday evening, said Niranjan Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP).
“An unfortunate incident has happened under the Mohana police station area in the district. Two siblings, a brother aged 5 years old and his younger sister aged three years old, both went out to play on Wednesday evening. When they did not return until 8-8:30 pm, the family members searched nearby areas and found a pit in the cemetery located near their house, which was made to store water. But due to rain, the pit was overfilled and both the children were found drowning in the pit,” ASP Niranjan Sharma told ANI.
Upon receiving the information from the family members, the police took out the children from the pit and sent them to the hospital, where they were declared dead. On the complaint of the family members, a case has been registered into the matter and an investigation is underway, he said.
Further action would be taken according to the probe report, he stressed.
When asked about the pit, ASP Sharma said that the pit was dug because the people who visit the cemetery wash their hands and feet, and water was needed for the same.
According to reports, the children were said to be the son and daughter of Sonu Khan, who lives in Danda Colony under the Mohana police station area, 70 km from the district headquarters. The children went to play in the nearby cemetery on Wednesday evening. When both the children did not return home, the family started searching for them. During which, the slippers of both the children were seen near the pit in the cemetery and when keenly looking into the pit, children were seen. After that, they immediately informed the Mohana police about the matter. (ANI)
