Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] August 26 (ANI): Police have arrested a 26-year-old man from Ludhiana in Punjab, for allegedly raping a woman on the false pretext of marriage, police said on Monday.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Raghav Rajesh Agarwal, allegedly raped the woman several times between January last year and August 2024.
The victim and the accused had met at an exhibition in Delhi, Khar police station officials said.
Upon investigation, the police discovered that the man was in Ludhiana. A Mumbai police team reached Ludhiana and arrested the accused, after which he was brought back to Mumbai, officials said.
Earlier on July 29, in a similar incident, Nalasopara police in the Palghar district arrested a man who allegedly used to rob women under the pretext of marriage.
The accused had deceived more than 20 women by luring them into marriage. The accused Firoz Niyazi Sheikh robbed women of their money and jewellery, police said.
He created fake online profiles and ensnared over 20 women. According to information received from Vijay Singh Bagal, an officer at the Nalasopara police station, the accused targeted widowed women. He met these women through online websites and disappeared after extracting large amounts of money from them. One of the victimized women lodged a complaint against the accused at the Nalasopara police station.
To catch the accused, the police created a woman’s profile on an online platform and contacted him. After conversing, they called him to Kalyan for a meeting and apprehended him there, officials said. (ANI)
